- Uppercase converter: changes lower case to upper case for every letter, the quickest way to write in all caps for labels or emphasis.
- Lowercase converter: turns uppercase to lowercase everywhere, including names and the pronoun I.
- Sentence case converter: lowercases everything, then capitalizes the first letter of each sentence, each new line and the word I.
- Title Case: capitalizes the major words and keeps articles, short prepositions and and/but/or/nor/for lowercase, following Chicago style. For APA, AP or MLA rules use Capitalize Title.
- Capitalize Each Word: a text capitalizer that capitalizes the first letter of every word, short words included.
- Alternating caps: switches between small and capital letters, skipping spaces and digits, for the mocking “sPoNgEbOb” style.
Turning all caps back into normal text
An all caps converter in reverse is the most common job: a heading, spreadsheet column or email typed with Caps Lock on. Sentence case fixes most of it in one step, but no tool can know which words are names. In the example above, “New York” comes out as “new york”, so read the result and restore proper nouns by hand.
Acronyms work the same way: lowercase and sentence case lower them too, while Title Case keeps a word such as NASA in capitals when the rest of the text is in mixed case.
Sentence case or title case?
Sentence case reads like an ordinary sentence and is what APA Style asks for in reference list titles. Title case capitalizes the important words and is the usual choice for the title of a book, article or headline. Style guides disagree on the small words, which is why the title capitalization tool lets you pick APA, AP, Chicago or MLA.
Other languages and special letters
Letters outside English are converted with the standard Unicode case rules built into your browser, so é becomes É and the German ß becomes SS in uppercase. Digits, punctuation and emoji are never changed.
